Nd:YAG Laser

Nd:YAG laser powered by a crystal can treat numerous conditions, but is ideal for the treatment of larger blood vessels and vascular lesions.

What is an Nd:YAG laser?

Nd:YAG laser is named for the crystal that is at its core, it is an acronym for neodymium-doped yttrium aluminium garnet. This solid-state laser has a special ability to reach deeper into the skin, with a wavelength of 1,064 nm. This is ideal for larger, deeper vascular lesions and blood vessels.

How does Nd:YAG work?

Nd:YAG is a non-ablative laser that emits photons at a specific single (monochromatic) wavelength of light energy: 1,064 nm. This wavelength is in the infrared spectrum, so it is invisible to the human eye. The oxyhaemoglobin chromophore absorbs most of the Nd:YAG laser pulse. This heats up the oxyhaemoglobin as well as the tissues that are rich in oxyhaemoglobin, such as blood vessels and other vascular lesions. Because of the deeper focus, it is better for larger and deeper vascular structures.

Due to the very precise nature of lasers, very little heating or damage impacts surrounding tissues.

A Nd:YAG laser is most effective for treating a range of vascular conditions, including:

What are the benefits of Nd:YAG treatment?

In cases of unwanted visible rosacea and veins, Nd:YAG can heat and collapse prominent blood vessels. It can also reduce excess tissue that makes the nose bulbous and red in some rosacea cases.

It is important to note that the Nd:YAG may not be the best treatment option for your condition, however, your specialist will discuss this with you in your consultation if that is the case for your skin.

More Information

Preparing for treatment

For four weeks prior to having an Nd:YAG session, please keep the treatment area away from any direct sunlight or tanning. Tanned skin can still be treated with the Nd:YAG, however, the machine’s settings will need to be modified, and this can compromise your results and increase your risk of having an adverse outcome.

The cost of reedemable consultations (where indicated) may be deducted from treatments within three months.

Post-treatment care

After your treatment, it may take up to four weeks for the full effects to become visibly noticeable. It is normal to experience some redness, discomfort, swelling, flakey skin, and a sensation similar to a mild sunburn. These symptoms should subside within a few hours to days, however, flakey skin can be expected for a few days.

In most cases, a course of three Nd:YAG treatments provides the best results. Some harsher pigments may require more treatments than others.

Four weeks after your treatment, we do recommend a follow-up with your specialist so that they can assess your results, discuss any concerns you may have, and plan additional treatment sessions if necessary.

Immediately after treatment

Within the first 6 to 8 hours, you will need to avoid putting pressure on the treated area. You can apply a light cold compress to ease swelling or other discomfort. It is important that you limit your exposure to sunlight and use at least an SPF 50 sunscreen.

You may notice that the treated area darkens at first. This is expected, however, from 48 to 72 hours after the treatment, the area will lighten.

Skincare

Your skin is going to be a little sensitive. Because of this, it is important to not irritate the skin. Ensure you use a soap-free cleanser and a non-fragranced moisturiser on the treated area. It is best to avoid exfoliation as well as other strong skincare products (such as retinol or vitamin C) for at least three days post-treatment.

You are encouraged to use sunscreen with an SPF of 50 or more and avoid prolonged sun exposure for at least two weeks after your treatment.

Activities

For at least 24 to 48 hours after treatment, please keep away from saunas, hot showers, steam rooms, and strenuous exercise. For at least 48 hours after your treatment, it is best that you don’t go swimming or soak in a hot tub.
