What is Botox?
Botox (botulinum toxin) is a naturally occurring protein that can be used to relax muscles for medical treatments. It is widely used throughout medical specialties for a range of several therapeutic benefits.
On this page, we briefly describe the common treatments available with Botox. For an in-depth review of how it works and the history of its usage, please see our Definitive Guide on Botox at the Anue Learning Hub.
The most commonly known brand of botulinum toxin is Botox. Other brands include Dysort and Xeomin. For simplicity, in this article, we will refer to botulinum toxin as “Botox”.
What can Botox treat?
Life is full of events that challenge our facial muscles with our natural expressions in various situations. This can result in creases developing on the face, such as around the eyes and forehead.
Botox is one of the most effective treatments to reduce the appearance of mature skin. Its effects on the appearance of wrinkles can be dramatic, and it can even be used to help prevent their development.
At Anue, we harness the power of this gift to improve and soften maturing skin.
However, Botox is not just about fine lines and wrinkles. Some of the most common treatments are:
- Forehead lines
- Crow’s feet (laugh lines on the outside of the eyes)
- Frown lines between the eyebrows
- Excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis)
The different types of Botox
Since the launch of Botox, other brands have become available for use. While these these are less well-known, they are well-established and have been used extensively around the world. Some of these newer products have beneficial characteristics such as faster onset of action, or resistance to rapid metabolism that some experience with Botox.
The main characteristics of the two main types are:
Botox | Dysport | |
---|---|---|
Onset | 5-14 days | 1-7 days |
Peak Action | 14 days | 14 days |
Duration | 4 months | 4-6 months |
Cost | $17 / unit | $7 / unit |
Prices indicative only. Please note that treatment with Dysport requires about 2.5-3 times the number of units to achieve the same effect as Botox.
How many units of Botox do I need?
It is impossible to give an exact amount that will apply to everyone. This is one reason why a consultation with an experienced provider is important. Mature skin generally needs more units.
Nonetheless, there are some general approximations:
Botox | Dysport | |
---|---|---|
Crow’s Feet | 14 units | 35 u |
Forehead Lines | 12 u | 30 u |
Glabella | 20 u | 50 u |
What is the treatment process?
We strongly recommend a consultation before your treatment. This allows you to consider your options without feeling pressured into treatment.
At your first appointment, our experienced care team will discuss your concerns and treatment goals. They will then undertake a comprehensive assessment of your skin and provide their expert recommendations. Together, you will develop a treatment plan to achieve what you want.
During the treatment session, your provider will proceed with the agreed-upon plan. We design our treatment rooms for a stress-free environment, featuring calming music, fresh walls, and a comfortable environment.
At Anue, we offer routine follow-up care to ensure you are not left unsupported. We also recommend a two-week appointment to assess the results, ensure you have no concerns, and discuss the ongoing treatment plan (if appropriate).
