What causes redness?
Several medical conditions can cause extensive redness and flushing, which people commonly find distressing.
The common causes of facial redness that we see are:
- Rosacea comes in four different types and usually requires medical treatment to get under control.
- Periorificial dermatitis is a chronic inflammatory condition that typically presents with crops of small red bumps around the eyes, mouth, or nose on a background of erythematous skin.
- Seborrhoeic dermatitis is another chronic inflammatory condition related to Malasezzia that mostly affects the head and face.
- Veins (telangiectasia) around the nose are very common and can be caused by rosacea, periorificial dermatitis, and seborrhoeic dermatitis.
- Flushing occurs due to a sudden increase in blood flow to the skin. There are numerous triggers for flushing, most of which are harmless, like changes in air temperature, embarrassment, or alcohol consumption. However, there are some serious medical problems that can cause flushing.
- Ruddy complexion is persistent facial redness that has many potential causes. The most common causes are genetics, rosacea, and chronic sun exposure.
- Keratosis pilaris rubra is a common, harmless condition that is caused by the accumulation of keratin (the skin protein) in the hair follicles. The skin can appear bumpy and rough. The affected skin can also have a red appearance.
- Angiomas (red spots) are common, small, benign growths of blood vessels. Most people will start accumulating them from the age of 30. While they are harmless, they can easily be removed with vascular laser devices.
- Poikiloderma of Civatte can cause a red-brown discolouration and thinning of the skin, mostly due to chronic sun exposure.

What are the treatment options for redness?

The most important part of treatment planning is starting with the correct diagnosis. Anue is a dermatologist-led clinic, which means that we can accurately diagnose your condition and select the correct treatment. When incorrect treatment is used it can delay improvement resulting in your frustration.
Vascular lasers and IPL can effectively treat some components of redness. Depending on your diagnosis, additional treatments may be necessary for optimal improvement. Some prescription creams can also help with flushing.
