Treatment for Redness and Flushing: Erythema

Redness and flushing (medically known as erythema) are common complaints for many people. This can be caused by dilation of of blood vessels and increased and volatile blood flow.

Uncover the reasons behind those flushed cheeks and rosy hues with us. Find out how we can help you gain a clean complexion with evidence-based treatments.

What causes redness?

Several medical conditions can cause extensive redness and flushing, which people commonly find distressing.

The common causes of facial redness that we see are:

  • Rosacea comes in four different types and usually requires medical treatment to get under control.
  • Periorificial dermatitis is a chronic inflammatory condition that typically presents with crops of small red bumps around the eyes, mouth, or nose on a background of erythematous skin.
  • Seborrhoeic dermatitis is another chronic inflammatory condition related to Malasezzia that mostly affects the head and face.
  • Veins (telangiectasia) around the nose are very common and can be caused by rosacea, periorificial dermatitis, and seborrhoeic dermatitis.
  • Flushing occurs due to a sudden increase in blood flow to the skin. There are numerous triggers for flushing, most of which are harmless, like changes in air temperature, embarrassment, or alcohol consumption. However, there are some serious medical problems that can cause flushing.
  • Ruddy complexion is persistent facial redness that has many potential causes. The most common causes are genetics, rosacea, and chronic sun exposure.
  • Keratosis pilaris rubra is a common, harmless condition that is caused by the accumulation of keratin (the skin protein) in the hair follicles. The skin can appear bumpy and rough. The affected skin can also have a red appearance.
  • Angiomas (red spots) are common, small, benign growths of blood vessels. Most people will start accumulating them from the age of 30. While they are harmless, they can easily be removed with vascular laser devices.
  • Poikiloderma of Civatte can cause a red-brown discolouration and thinning of the skin, mostly due to chronic sun exposure.

What are the treatment options for redness?

The most important part of treatment planning is starting with the correct diagnosis. Anue is a dermatologist-led clinic, which means that we can accurately diagnose your condition and select the correct treatment. When incorrect treatment is used it can delay improvement resulting in your frustration.

Vascular lasers and IPL can effectively treat some components of redness. Depending on your diagnosis, additional treatments may be necessary for optimal improvement. Some prescription creams can also help with flushing.

What to expect

An experienced healthcare provider will conduct your first appointment as a consultation. The first thing they will ascertain is what your skin concerns are and what your desired outcome is. Preparing for Treatment

It is important that you keep the treatment area out of direct sunlight and avoid tanning for four weeks prior to the treatment session. While tanned skin can be treated, we will need to modify the treatment, compromising your results and it will increase the risk of adverse outcomes.

Post-treatment Care

The full effects of the various treatments can take up to four weeks to become visible. Generally, a course of three treatments (case-dependent) is recommended for optimal results. Following each treatment, it is normal to experience some discomfort, redness, swelling, and a sensation like a mild sunburn. These side effects typically subside within a few hours to days. Some flaking of the skin for a few days is also normal.

We recommend a two-week appointment to assess results, ensure you have no concerns, and discuss the ongoing treatment plan (if appropriate).

Immediately After Treatment

  • Avoid touching or putting pressure on the treated area for at least 6 to 8 hours.
  • Apply a cold compress or ice pack to reduce any discomfort or swelling.
  • Minimise sunlight exposure and use sunscreen.
  • Treated areas may initially darken, then lighten after 48 to 72 hours.

Skin Care for Redness

  • Use a soap-free cleanser and a non-fragrance moisturiser.
  • Avoid exfoliation and any strong skincare products around the treated area for at least 3 days. This includes retinol (vitamin A) and vitamin C.
  • Apply sunscreen with an SPF of 50 or higher to protect the treated area and avoid prolonged sun exposure for at least 2 weeks post-treatment.

Activities

Avoid strenuous exercise, hot showers, saunas, and steam rooms for at least 24 to 48 hours post-treatment. Also, avoid swimming or soaking in hot tubs for at least 48 hours.
