About Entonox Gas

Entonox is a safe, widely used inhaled medical gas used to give quick relief from pain. It is a gas that contains a mixture of:

  • 50% oxygen; and
  • 50% nitrous oxide – commonly known as laughing gas.

Entonox is considered very safe, with few side effects during short-term use. The pain-relieving affect starts working within a few breaths. It typically wears off quickly (5-10 minutes) so people can drive home afterwards.

Despite it wearing off quickly, we still recommend an observation period of 20-30 minutes before driving home.1Young A, Ismail M, Papatsoris AG, Barua JM, Calleary JG, Masood J. How Does Entonox Gas Work?

Nitrous oxide has been used for over 200 years to help with relieving pain. Recently, oxygen has been added to nitrous oxide to produce Entonox and ensure its safety.

The inhaled nitrous oxide enters the blood stream rapidly. It starts working within about 20 seconds and achieves peak effect within about 3-5 minutes. Nitrous oxide works by reducing pain impulses and signals that travel to the brain. It works in a similar way to opioid medications.

Nitrous oxide also has an anti-anxiety effect by reducing anxiety impulses and signals similar to how benzodiazepine medications work.2Young A, Ismail M, Papatsoris AG, Barua JM, Calleary JG, Masood J.
