How Does Laser Eyelid Tightening Work?

Normal ageing results in skin laxity which causes the appearance of excess skin of the eyelids. However, almost half of the components of ‘ageing’ eyelid skin is due to texture, or a loss of smooth eyelid skin.1Roberts TL 3rd, Yokoo KM. In pursuit of optimal periorbital rejuvenation: laser resurfacing with or without blepharoplasty and brow lift. Aesthet Surg J. 1998;18(5):321-332. doi: 10.1016/s1090-820x(98)70086-x

Many people come to see us at Anue about this very common complaint. Traditionally, this was treated with surgery – a blepharoplasty. While surgery can improve apparent ‘excess skin’, it doesn’t help with improving texture, or achieving smooth skin. Surgery also does not help with fine lines or pigmentation.

Fractional CO2 for laser eyelid tightening provides the best balance of efficacy and downtime. Eyelid laser treatment is more effective than surgical blepharoplasty at reducing wrinkles.2Tierney EP, Hanke CW, Watkins L. Treatment of lower eyelid rhytids and laxity with ablative fractionated carbon-dioxide laser resurfacing: Case series and review of the literature. J Am Acad Dermatol. 2011;64(4):730-740. doi: 10.1016/j.jaad.2010.04.023

The result is softening of lines and wrinkles, reduced pores and tightening of skin laxity. Eyelid laser treatment also heps with new collagen production and collagen remodelling for several months after treatment.3Bae-Harboe YS, Geronemus RG. Eyelid tightening by CO2 fractional laser, alternative to blepharoplasty. Dermatol Surg. 2014;40 Suppl 12:S137-S141. doi: 10.1097/DSS.0000000000000165

Preparing for Eyelid Laser Treatment

It is important that you keep the treatment area out of direct sunlight and avoid tanning for four weeks prior to the treatment session. While tanned skin can be treated, we will need to modify the settings, compromising your results and it will increase the risk of adverse outcomes.

Treatment Quickfacts

For resurfacing laser treatment for the face there will be a period of recovery and “social downtime”.

  • Numbing: Numbing cream recommended.
  • Swelling: 1-3 days.
  • Redness: 3-5 days.
  • Social downtime: up to 7 days.

Post treatment care for Laser Eyelid Tightening

While initial improvement will be visible with a few weeks, the full effects of treatment can take up to 3-6 months. Following eyelid laser treatment, it is normal to experience some discomfort, redness, swelling, and a sensation like a mild sunburn. These effects typically subside within a few hours to days depending on the treatment method. Some flaking of the skin for a few days is also normal.

We recommend a follow-up appointment four weeks after your eyelid laser treatment to assess your results, individual response, and to plan additional treatments if required.

Immediately after eyelid laser treatment

  • Avoid touching or putting pressure on the treated area for at least 6 to 8 hours.
  • Apply a cold compress or ice pack to reduce any discomfort or swelling.
  • Minimise sunlight exposure and use sunscreen.
  • Treated areas may initially darken, then lighten after 48 to 72 hours.
  • Avoid driving until vision is clear

Skincare

  • Use a soap-free cleanser and a non-fragrance moisturiser.
  • Avoid exfoliation and any strong skincare products around the treated area for at least 3 days. This includes retinol (vitamin A) and vitamin C.
  • Apply sunscreen with an SPF50 or higher to protect the treated area and avoid prolonged sun exposure for at least two weeks post-treatment.

Activities

Avoid strenuous exercise, hot showers, saunas, and steam rooms for at least 24-48 hours after eyelid laser treatment. Also, avoid swimming or soaking in hot tubs for at least 48 hours.
