How does PRP work?

PRP treatment is a type of regenerative medicine that uses your blood’s natural growth factors.

A small amount of blood is concentrated for plasma.

This platelet rich plasma has a high concentration of growth factors and can be used as a PRP injection where needed.

How PRP treatment: Platelet rich plasma works

High dose PRP treatment - platelet rich plasma

Not all PRP is the Same

Studies have shown that the platelet dose of PRP has a significant impact on treatment efficacy.

These studies have demonstrated that a dose of 1 million platelets per microlitre is the optimal concentration to deliver the best results.1Gentile P, Garcovich S. Systematic Review-The Potential Implications of Different Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Concentrations in Regenerative Medicine for Tissue Repair. Int J Mol Sci. 2020;21(16):5702. Published 2020 Aug 9. doi: 10.3390/ijms21165702,2Rahman E, Rao P, Abu-Farsakh HN, et al. Platelets: The Key to PRP Treatment

Platelets are cells in your blood that respond when a blood vessel is damaged.  In addition platelets play an important role in healing by releasing growth factors and stimulating a cascade of processes that lead to tissue repair.

Platelets also assist to stimulate Mesenchymal Stem Cells (MSCs) in the skin to change from resting to active phase.  The MSCs will form new tissue such collagen, elastin, muscle, nerves, blood vessels, etc., thus assisting to restore the structure of your skin.

The Right Cells At The Right Concentration

To deliver effective rejuvenation the platelets must be concentrated to around five to nine times the baseline level found in your blood.  This platelet rich plasma must have the red blood cells removed, and nutrients such as amino acids, electrolytes, saccharides, and other micro-nutrients must be present in the right amounts.

White blood cells such as neutrophils and monocytes also play important roles in skin rejuvenation treatments.  Neutrophils assist in the removal of damaged tissue in preparation for new tissue regeneration.  Monocytes are white blood cells that convert into two types of macrophages in skin tissue (M1 or M2). M1 will remove debris, pathogens, bacteria and fibrotic tissue, allowing for a new layer of healthy collagen and elastin. M2 send messenger chemicals to stimulate fibroblasts to repair and regenerate the skin.

How Many Treatments Are Required?

Typically an initial course of three treatments spaced over 6 to 12 weeks is recommended.  In order to counteract ongoing ageing of the skin a regular maintenance PRP treatment every 6 to 12 months will assist to maintain results.

Platelet rich plasma treatment can be used as a stand-alone treatment or in conjunction with other therapies such as Fractional CO2 Laser, IPL, Microneedling, and more.

Emcyte

Why we use Emcyte PRP at Anue

Earlier generation ‘test-tube’ style PRP systems were not capable of concentrating platelets to the correct concentration necessary for optimal and effective rejuvenation: 1 million platelets per microlitre.

Many PRP systems struggle to concentrate platelets high enough. A study in 2019 proved that EmCyte’s PRP provided the highest concentration of platelets.3Fadadu PP, Mazzola AJ, Hunter CW, Davis TT. Review of concentration yields in commercially available platelet-rich plasma (PRP) systems: a call for PRP standardization. Reg Anesth Pain Med. Published online April 16, 2019. doi: 10.1136/rapm-2018-100356

EmCyte Pure PRP® allows us to deliver consistent results and tailor the treatment to your specific needs.

What can be Treated with PRP

Studies have demonstrated benefit for facial rejuvenation. They have shown improvements in skin elasticity, smoothness, lines & wrinkles, appearance, cellular volume and amount of collagen, skin quality.4Hersant B, SidAhmed-Mezi M, Aboud C, et al. Compared to dermal fillers, PRP can restore naturally lost volume without the risk of over-filling giving a more natural look.

Hairloss

Studies have demonstrated efficacy for hair regrowth, significantly improving both hair diameter and hair density.9Gupta AK, Cole J, Deutsch DP, et al. Vitiligo

Studies have demonstrated that PRP combination treatment results in about half of patients achieving >75% repigmentation in those with stable vitiligo.12Ibrahim ZA, El-Ashmawy AA, El-Tatawy RA, Sallam FA. Post treatment care

The full effects of the fractional laser treatment can take up to four weeks to become visible. Generally, a course of three treatments (case-dependent) is recommended for optimal results. Following the treatment, it is normal to experience some discomfort, redness, swelling, and a sensation like a mild sunburn. These side effects typically subside within a few hours to days. Some flaking of the skin for a few days is also normal.

We recommend a follow-up appointment four weeks after the treatment to assess your results, individual response, and to plan additional treatments if required.

Immediately after treatment

  • Avoid touching or putting pressure on the treated area for at least 6 to 8 hours.
  • Apply a cold compress or ice pack to reduce any discomfort or swelling.
  • Minimise sunlight exposure and use sunscreen.
  • Treated areas may initially darken, then lighten after 48 to 72 hours.

Skincare

  • Use a soap-free cleanser and a non-fragrance moisturiser.
  • Avoid exfoliation and any strong skincare products around the treated area for at least 3 days. This includes retinol (vitamin A) and vitamin C.
  • Apply sunscreen with an SPF of 50 or higher to protect the treated area and avoid prolonged sun exposure for at least 2 weeks post-treatment.

Activities

Avoid strenuous exercise, hot showers, saunas, and steam rooms for at least 24 to 48 hours post-treatment. Also, avoid swimming or soaking in hot tubs for at least 48 hours.
