What are the Benefits of Repigmentation Treatment

Boost pigment (melanin)

Treatments stimulate the production of melanin reducing the appearance of white spots.

Improve Texture & Tone

Treatments help to smooth skin texture, even out pigmentation and improve tone.

Stimulate Collagen

Light and laser treatments stimulate collagen production and remodelling and plumping the skin, softening the appearance of fine lines.

How does Repigmentation Work?

Repigmentation treatment uses a technique called laser assisted drug delivery (LADD) to deliver medications into the skin to stimulate the production of melanin.

We use lasers to create microscopic channels that can extend to the dermis of the skin. Medication is then applied over these channels allowing it to penetrate deeper down into the skin. The medication then acts where it needs to boosting the production of pigment (melanin).

The micro-channels that are created also give you the added benefit of rejuvenated, smoother skin as well as restoring pigment from the same treatment session.

Which medications are used for repigmentation?

There are specific medications that have been shown to be effective for repigmentation. However, these medications are primarily used for other purposes.

Unfortunately, regulators don’t allow us to name these medications on our website as they are considered ‘off-label‘ for the purpose of repigmentation.

However, we are allowed to discuss these medications in full during your consultation. So book an appointment and we can discuss these options with you.

What can be Treated with Repigmentation?

White patches of the skin that have lost pigment have historically been one of the most difficult aspects of dermatology to treat effectively. However, recent breakthroughs have provided promising results.

Types of white discolouration that can be treated with LADD:

  • White scars from acne
  • Surgical wounds including skin grafts
  • Other traumatic wounds, scars and burns
  • White areas from previous laser treatment
  • IGH (Idiopathic Guttate Hypomelanosis) – these are spots that come from age and chronic sun exposure

Preparing for Repigmentation

It is important that you keep the treatment area out of direct sunlight and avoid tanning for four weeks prior to the treatment session. While tanned skin can be treated, we will need to modify the settings, compromising your results and it will increase the risk of adverse outcomes.

Post treatment care

The full effects of treatment can take 4-12 weeks to become visible. Generally, a course of about three treatments (case-dependent) is recommended for optimal results. Following treatment, it is normal to experience some discomfort, redness, swelling, and a sensation like a mild sunburn. These effects typically subside within a few hours to days depending on the treatment method. Some flaking of the skin for a few days is also normal.

We recommend a follow-up appointment four weeks after treatment to assess your results, individual response, and to plan additional treatments if required.

Immediately after treatment

  • Avoid touching or putting pressure on the treated area for at least 6 to 8 hours.
  • Apply a cold compress or ice pack to reduce any discomfort or swelling.
  • Minimise sunlight exposure and use sunscreen.
  • Treated areas may initially darken, then lighten after 48 to 72 hours.

Skincare

  • Use a soap-free cleanser and a non-fragrance moisturiser.
  • Avoid exfoliation and any strong skincare products around the treated area for at least 3 days. This includes retinol (vitamin A) and vitamin C.
  • Apply sunscreen with an SPF50 or higher to protect the treated area and avoid prolonged sun exposure for at least two weeks post-treatment.

Activities

Avoid strenuous exercise, hot showers, saunas, and steam rooms for at least 24-48 hours post-treatment. Also, avoid swimming or soaking in hot tubs for at least 48 hours.
