Real Results for Hyper Pigmentation

What causes hyper pigmentation?

It is normal for skin to have pigmentation from melanin. Hyper pigmentation (more than normal) can appear as discolouration on the skin. The most common causes are melasma, sun exposure, aging and genetics.

Please note that some pigmentation can be caused by underlying medical conditions and skin cancer, so it is important to ensure it is diagnosed correctly before treatment.

The Most Common Causes of Hyperpigmentation

Chronic sun exposure: is probably the most common cause of hyperpigmentation. It can result in lentigo and freckles (brown spots).

Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation: this is caused by some type of injury to the skin such as a burn, inflammation (e.g. eczema) or acne scars. It can become more obvious once the initial healing process has resolved. This occurs more commonly in those with darker skin types. It is normally temporary, although can sometimes take several months to resolve.

Melasma: is a ‘mask-like’, blotchy hyperpigmentation of the face. It is common during pregnancy, although it is not always caused by pregnancy. While not entirely understood, it does seem to relate to sun exposure and oestrogen exposure.

Other Causes of Hyperpigmentation

There are dozens of causes of hyperpigmentation and it is not possible to list them here.

If you are concerned by another cause of hyperpigmentation, please contact our dermatologist-led team.

Hyperpigmentation treatment options

It is important to ensure that the correct diagnosis is made for your hyper pigmentation. Some conditions, such as melasma can worsen with some laser treatments if this is not accounted for.

  • Intense Pulsed Light & Frax are the most commonly used treatments at Anue for excess pigment (melanin). As an added benefit, both treatments have a rejuvenation effect. When combined they are called Light & Bright.
  • Fractional CO2 laser
  • Medication & Laser-assisted Drug Delivery: both topical and systemic medications can reduce melanin production and are particularly useful for melasma.
  • Chemical peels such as Cosmelan are a popular and effective option.

Preparing for hyperpigmentation treatment

It is important that you keep the treatment area out of direct sunlight and avoid tanning for four weeks prior to the treatment session. While tanned skin can be treated, we will need to modify the settings, compromising your results and it will increase the risk of adverse outcomes.

Post treatment care

The full effects of treatment can take 4-12 weeks to become visible. Generally, a course of treatments (case-dependent) is recommended for optimal results. Following treatment, it is normal to experience some discomfort, redness, swelling, and a sensation like a mild sunburn. These effects typically subside within a few hours to days depending on the treatment method. Some flaking of the skin for a few days is also normal.

We recommend a follow-up appointment four weeks after treatment to assess your results, individual response, and to plan additional treatments if required.

Immediately after treatment

  • Avoid touching or putting pressure on the treated area for at least 6 to 8 hours.
  • Apply a cold compress or ice pack to reduce any discomfort or swelling.
  • Minimise sunlight exposure and use sunscreen.
  • Treated areas may initially darken, then lighten after 48 to 72 hours.

Skincare

  • Use a soap-free cleanser and a non-fragrance moisturiser.
  • Avoid exfoliation and any strong skincare products around the treated area for at least 3 days. This includes retinol (vitamin A) and vitamin C.
  • Apply sunscreen with an SPF50 or higher to protect the treated area and avoid prolonged sun exposure for at least two weeks post-treatment.

Activities

Avoid strenuous exercise, hot showers, saunas, and steam rooms for at least 24-48 hours post-treatment. Also, avoid swimming or soaking in hot tubs for at least 48 hours.
